Skin disorders can result from allergies, poor diet leading to nutritional deficiencies, toxins, bacteria or fungal infections, impurities in the blood, exposure to harsh chemicals, pollution, hard water, soap and detergents, medications or too much sunshine.
Methylisothiazolinone (MI or MIT and E Number 1223), also known asmethylisothiazoline, is a powerful synthetic biocide and preservative commonly used in a range of consumer personal care products, including cosmetics, lotions, moisturisers, mouthwashes, sanitary wipes, shampoos, soaps, sunscreens and dish washing-up liquid. It is a cytotoxin that may affect different types of cells and dermatologists have long been concerned about a rise in the number of people having allergic responses to it.
It can cause cell and nerve damage and is lethal to mature neurons in the brain due to its ability to liberate zinc from intracellular metal binding sites. The liberated zinc, in turn, triggers a cell death cascade in neurons. Check labels for this additive, especially if suffering from skin disorders.
Human skin is the biggest organ of the body. If spread out, the average skin of an adult male would measure about two square metres and weigh between 10 to 15 kilos. Every thirty-five days the skin replaces itself using the food ingested. If the body is not provided with the correct balance of nutrients, for this process to take place, it will begin to show in the skin, nails and hair first. Spots, dry rashes, brittle nails and lank dull hair are all signs that the body is missing the right balance of nutrients.
A healthy diet of fresh fruit and vegetables, plenty of fibre, oily fish and herbs and spices can rectify most skin disorders quite quickly. Fatty foods, sugar, drugs, coffee, alcohol, animal products, refined and processed foods and additives can all adversely affect the skin and produce blemishes, rashes, spots and dry or oily skin.
Vitamin A deficiency can be the cause of acne, boils and bumpy skin.
Foods rich in hyaluronan should be consumed with foods rich in vitamin C and vitamin E to keep skin looking young, wrinkle free and smooth therefore a meal of calf’s liver with ground hemp seeds and fresh vegetables and a desert of kiwi fruit and oranges consumed once a week would be suitable for this purpose. Regular consumption of bone broth can have the same effect.
Research shows that foods that have plant-based estrogenic called phytoestrogen can increase the production of hyaluronic acid in the body
The liver is the father of all organs and needs regularly detoxification so that it can do its job properly which includes expulsion of toxins, and other unhealthy materials that can congregate in the body. The skin, nails and hair will show these impurities often before they can do any serious damage within, so it is wise to treat the liver to a total cleanse whenever the hair and nails are lacking in strength, elasticity and lustre or the skin is showing blemishes, dryness or over production of oils.
The liver has one of the first stop jobs of sorting through the food and toxins that are ingested. It can regenerate itself if minor damage from excessive toxins occurs but eventually it will get clogged and overworked which is when food stops being digested properly and the rest of the system is affected beginning with the skin. The following will clean it up so it can do its job. These ingredients together, taken in a glass of warm water first thing in the morning, will cleanse the liver and the blood:
- Juice of one lemon or lime (freshly squeezed)
- Apple cider vinegar (one tablespoon)
- Pure honey (one teaspoon)
- Turmeric (quarter teaspoon)
- Cayenne pepper (pinch)
For more liver cleansers see>> Liver disorders
Acne
The main reason for all acne is clogged pores, but there are many triggers that can lead to spots, pimples and acne. Triggers include
- Allergies
- Bacterial infections
- Contact with oily substances
- Hormone fluctuations
- Nutrient deficiencies
- Toxin overload
It is better to treat the triggers in order to prevent acne through a healthy nutritious diet rather than try to clear the spots after they have appeared.
Causes of acne
Pores will swell and cause skin cells and oils to become trapped inside, which may lead to acne. A natural remedy against this trigger will include ingredients that work to eliminate swelling. Alternatively, large pores make it easy for skin cells from the surface of the skin to fall into pores and cause a clog. A natural remedy that reduces pore size may eliminate new breakouts.
There are plenty of ways for pores to become clogged, but clogging is the ultimate trigger for infection and acne. Excess oil production can cause pores to become sticky, trapping skin cells inside.
When this happens, it is best to treat the problem with a natural remedy that will reduce oil production. Oil production may increase as a result of hormone fluctuations, so internal remedies that work to improve the metabolism balance may work best when this happens. This type of acne generally occurs during times of high stress, menstruation, puberty and pregnancy or pre-menopause.
Acne may develop due to an allergic reaction to dairy products. The number one cause of acne is the consumption of milk from cows. Any dairy products, but especially liquid milk, including cheese, butter and ice cream, can promote acne. See>> Allergies
Organic goat’s milk is a healthy alternative to try if cow’s milk is the trigger. Also consume plenty of live probiotic products, such as yogurt, to maintain healthy intestinal flora but avoid all other cows’ milk products. See>> Feed your friendly bacteria
Modern dairy and other animal products often contain hormones and steroids that can upset the body’s natural hormonal balance. About 80 percent of milked dairy cows are pregnant, which causes the hormone progesterone to appear in their milk.
Sugar must be avoided because it impairs immune function and feeds the bacteria which have begun to multiply within the sebaceous glands which surround hair follicles. Biopsies of individuals with acne have shown their tissues’ glucose tolerance to be seriously flawed. Honey is a useful alternative as it has antibacterial properties.
It has been said that acne is solely caused by bacteria but that’s not entirely true. It’s often caused by the body trying to get rid of toxins. The skin is an organ that can excrete waste products and acne is one way that the body is actually excreting internal toxins through the skin to get rid of them.
As much as the link between pubescent hormonal changes and acne is true, the skin disorder is not just confined to the teenage years. Many adults suffer from acne, as well. Some adult acne sufferers have elevated levels of male hormones that stimulate sebum production. Genetic factors may be the cause of these elevated androgen levels or, again, it may be due to the consumption of cow’s milk.
Long-term consumption of bromine can result in brominism, a toxic condition and even trace amounts of bromine can trigger severe acne in sensitive individuals. Natural sources of bromine are: chlorella, kelp, seaweed, sea salt and spirulina.
Natural remedies for acne
Dietary clean-up is the basis of natural therapy for acne. Excess sugar, saturated fat and hydrogenated oils must be eliminated. Certain foods trigger acne in susceptible people. For some, it is sugar or chocolate, for others, dairy products. Still others react to iodine in shellfish or excess iodised salt. Some experience exacerbations with spicy foods. Try Himalayan pink salt crystals as a healthy alternative.
Raw juice therapy can successfully treat acne. The best organic natural foods to juice or blend into smoothies are:
- Grapes
- Pear
- Plum
- Tomato
- Cucumber
- Carrots
- Spinach
Keep hair off the face. Long hair or a fringe should be tied back from the face. Hair contains oils and will contribute to acne breakouts. Wash the hair regularly and especially after workouts.
Wash pillowcases every other day – Your face lays on your pillowcase every day which absorbs the oils and dirt from the skin and reapplies the dirt and oil causing further outbreaks.
The Propionibacterium acnes bacteria can be the cause of acne. Cashew nuts contain polyphenols and salicylic acid that have powerful antibacterial properties against it.
Natural antibiotic remedies against the Propionibacterium acnes
- Cashew nuts (Anacardium occidentale)
- Eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis)
- Limes (Citrus aurantifolia)
- Moringa (Moringa oleifera)
- Poke root (Phytolacca americana, Phytolacca decandra)
With a little experimentation and self-observation it is possible to discover what foods trigger, exacerbate, relieve and cure acne outbreaks. See the natural remedies for skin disorders below.
Age spots
Age spots, sometimes called ‘liver spots’ are caused by excessive exposure over many years to the ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun and are nothing to do with the liver. They are due to the clumping of melanin which is the pigment in the skin. Any dark areas of the skin can be treated with the following natural remedies but avoid using them around the eyes.
Natural remedies for age spots
Ingredients
- One tablespoon of salt
- One tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda
- One tablespoon of olive oil
- Clay
- A tablespoon of milk
- The juice of half a lemon
Method
- Mix the salt, bicarbonate of soda and olive oil together to form a paste.
- Apply to affected area and leave on for 20 minutes then wash off.
- Then mix the clay, milk and lemon juice together to form a paste and apply to the same area.
- Leave on for 15 minutes then wash off, pat dry and apply cold-pressed coconut oil.
The following can all help to reduce the appearance of age spots and, if used regularly twice a day, may make them disappear altogether. Try rubbing into the affected areas and leaving for at least 10 minutes before washing off and applying vitamin E oil or coconut oil.
- Aloe vera gel (direct from a fresh leaf)
- Apple cider vinegar (diluted with a little water)
- Buttermilk
- Castor oil
- Cucumber
- Dandelion juice
- Lemon juice
- Onion juice
- Papaya juice
- Radish juice
- Rosewater
- Sandalwood powder (mixed with any of the juices)
- Tomato juice
NOTE: Do not allow sun on the skin after using apple cider vinegar or lemon juice as it can cause sunburn. Always try to keep areas with age spots out of the sun anyway as sun exposure can darken them. If they are on the face, always wear a hat with a wide brim.
Bruises and swelling
Externally, hold under a cold tap for a few minutes, apply an ice pack or a frozen bag of peas, apple cider vinegar or tamanu oil to reduce swelling.
A poultice made from chicory or lettuce and nutmeg can be applied to further reduce bruises and swelling.
Mugwort. Mix the dry herb with honey and apply to bruises to fade them.
Natural foods to consume to treat bruises and swelling
Burns and sunburn
Serious burns with large blisters need to be treated professionally because of risk of serious infection and dehydration. Consuming coconut water or pineapple juice can alleviate dehydration.
Small burns should be held under a cold running tap to instantly reduce the temperature and prevent further damage. Then they should be kept dry and clean and not covered, if possible, to help faster healing.
Mild sunburn or first-degree burns can be treated externally using the following natural remedies: a
- Aloe vera gel
- Honey
- Pot marigold
- Reed mace
- Egg white (beaten to fluffy stage)
- Comfrey (hot fomentation compress)
Use cold water and an apple cider vinegar compress until the pain goes away then apply potato slices or chopped up peeled raw potatoes mixed with water to make a paste.
Cellulite
Without enough vitamin C, magnesium, or omega-3 fatty acids, connective tissue weakens, inflammation rises, and fat gets stored less efficiently and can lead to cellulite.
Cellulite is the dimpled or bumpy appearance of skin, that is caused by a combination of factors including genetics, fat distribution, connective tissue structure and lifestyle. While it’s more common in women, men can also develop cellulite.
Natural foods to consume to treat cellulite
- Burdock root
- Gotu kola
- Kiwi fruit
- Mango
- Oily fish
- Papaya
- Raisins
Teas can be made with herbs by adding hot but not boiling water to them and leaving to steep for 30 minutes then strain and sip 3 – 6 cups a day slowly. Honey can be added to sweeten, and they can be reheated gently but don’t boil.
Avoid: meat products, margarine, sugar, coffee and refined white flours and processed foods with additives.
Try a regular exercise class and massage to help reduce the appearance of cellulite.
Cellulitis
Cellulitis is most often caused by a bacterial infection that enters the skin through a break or opening, such as a cut, scrape, surgery or insect bite. While bacteria like Streptococci and Staphylococci are common culprits, other bacteria can also be responsible. In some cases, fungal infections can also lead to cellulitis. For natural antibiotics see>> Bacterial infections and natural antibiotics
Consume cherries and rosehips to alleviate symptoms of chilblains. Externally the following can provide relief:
- Chicory poultice
- Lettuce poultice
- Pine needle tea bath
- Potato paste
- Tamanu oil
Cold sores
Cold sores, also called fever blisters, are caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1, which is usually acquired in childhood through contact with infected saliva. The type 1 virus is believed to lie dormant in certain nerve cells of the body until it is activated by stress, anxiety, a cold or excessive exposure to the sun. It causes sores on the external lip or near the mouth or nose that last anywhere from seven to 14 days.
Glycyrrhizic acid, an ingredient in liquorice root, kills the cold sore virus cells. Dab some of the powdered liquorice root on the cold sore then use aloe vera gel for instant relief. Covering a cold sore with petroleum jelly will speed healing and help protect it from secondary infection with bacteria.
Soak a cotton ball in milk and apply it to the sore to relieve pain. If this is done as soon as the tingling is felt before the cold sore surfaces, it can help speed the healing right from the beginning.
Ice held on to the cold sore just as it is appearing can reduce the time it takes to heal.
Always use new toothbrush after the blister has formed and again after the attack has cleared up. Toothbrushes can harbour the virus.
Cold sores are extremely contagious, avoid kissing and sharing cups, towels or other such items. Wash hands frequently, especially after touching the cold sore. And take care not to touch eyes or genitals immediately after touching the sore as the virus can spread to these places. Keep a hand sanitiser with you when out in case a bathroom is unavailable.
Avoid yeast products and mushrooms as these foods can cause flare ups of the herpes virus.
Attempting to camouflage a cold sore with makeup often aggravates the problem, as the chemicals in makeup can make the sore worse. Sharing lipstick or makeup can pass the virus to others.
Cuts, wounds and splinters
Externally, the following can help stop bleeding:
Cayenne pepper sprinkled on the inside of a banana skin and placed on the skin with a bandage will draw out any foreign object (splinters, etc) embedded in the flesh.
Medicinal herbs to aid skin healing
- Blueberry leaf extract
- Burdock root
- Dandelion root
- Golden seal root
- Oregano
- Parsley
- Sage
- Stinging nettles
- Suma
- White willow
For natural foods that can aid with healing see>> Healthy diet to aid recovery

Dry skin, dermatitis, eczema and itchy red rashes
Dry skin conditions can be due to the following:
- Allergies
- Cosmetics and personal care products
- Air conditioning
- Air pollution
- Central heating
- Hard water
- Harsh chemicals
- Low humidity
- Medications
- Poor diet
- Soap, detergent and other cleaning products
- Tobacco smoke
- Washing powders and fabric conditioners
- Winter
Natural foods including plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs, spices, seeds, nuts, oily fish and whole grains can rectify these skin conditions. Too many hot baths and showers can aggravate them. Raw juice therapy can successfully treat dry skin conditions. The best organic natural foods to juice or blend are beetroot, carrot, cucumber, red grapes and spinach.
Externally, adding coconut oil, tea tree oil, baby oil or vitamin E oil to a bath can help to retain some moisture in the skin. Pastes (butters) made from ground nuts and seeds and applied daily can be very effective.
The following are natural remedies that can also be applied externally to relieve dry skin conditions. Use a powerful blender to make a thick cream using a combination of any of the ingredients below and rub onto dry skin then consumed what is left over. These remedies should be made, stored in a refrigerator and used the same day.
- Apricots
- Borage
- Burdock root
- Cinnamon
- Chinese rhubarb root
- Egg white (beaten to fluffy stage)
- Honey
- Mango
- Oats
- Olive oil
- Papaya
- Parsley
- Pine needle tea
- Pumpkin
- Raspberries
- Strawberries
- Watercress
- Yoghurt
The following can also relieve dry skin conditions but should not be consumed.
- Tamanu oil
- Tea tree oil
- Sweet almond oil
Fresh, crushed mugwort leaves applied to the skin relieves the burning, itching and pain of skin rashes including that caused by shingles and, with continued application, can help get rid of warts.
Gangrene
Gangrene is a medical term used to describe the death of an area of the body. It develops when the blood supply is cut off to the affected part as a result of various processes, such as infection, vascular (blood vessels) disease or trauma. Gangrene can involve any part of the body; the most common sites include the legs, arms, toes, fingers, feet and hands.
Two major types of gangrene exist:
Dry gangrene is caused by a reduction of blood flow through the arteries. It appears gradually and progresses slowly. In most people, the affected part does not become infected. In this type of gangrene, the tissue becomes cold and black, begins to dry and eventually sloughs off. Dry gangrene is commonly seen in people with blockage of arteries, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, tobacco smoking and genetic and other factors. Because the cause of dry gangrene is a lack of blood flow, restoring the blood supply is vital.
Wet or moist gangrene develops as a complication of an untreated infected wound. Swelling resulting from the bacterial infection causes a sudden stoppage of blood flow. Cessation of blood flow facilitates invasion of the muscles by the bacteria and multiplication of the bacteria because disease-fighting cells (white blood cells) cannot reach the affected part.
Gas gangrene is a type of wet gangrene caused by the bacteria known as Clostridia. Clostridia are a type of infection-causing bacteria that grow only in the absence of oxygen. As Clostridia grow, they produce poisonous toxins and gas. This condition needs to be treated aggressively because of the threat of the infection rapidly spreading via the bloodstream and damaging vital organs.
Risk factors for the development of gangrene
- Injury or trauma, such as a crush injury, a severe burn, or frostbite.
- Diseases that affect the circulation of blood, such as arteriosclerosis, diabetes, smoking, or Raynaud’s disease.
- Infection of wounds
First signs of gangrene
- An area of the body turns blue or black
- A wound does not heal in 7 to 14 days
- Pain in a localized area is severe
- Unexplained fever is persistent
- Pus or blood drains from the wound
- A foul-smelling odour discharges from the wound
Dry gangrene
- The affected area becomes cold and numb
- Initially, the affected area becomes red
- Then, it develops a brown discolouration
- Finally, it becomes black and shrivelled
Wet or moist gangrene
- The affected area becomes swollen and decays
- It is extremely painful
- Local oozing occurs
- It produces a foul-smelling odour
- It becomes black
- The affected person develops a fever
Gas gangrene
- The wound is infected
- A brown-red or bloody discharge may ooze from the affected tissues
- Gas produced by clostridia may produce a crackling sensation when the affected area is pressed
- It becomes swollen
- Pain in the affected area is severe
- The affected person develops fever, increased heart rate and rapid breathing if the toxins spread into the bloodstream
Because bacteria can replicate so rapidly urgent attention must be given. If left too long the only remedy is amputation to stop it spreading to other parts of the body. Treating the under lying cause immediately is vital.
The following can help to kill bacteria and stimulate the body to provide blood to the area if applied externally: aloe vera gel, apple cider vinegar, black pepper, coconut, comfrey (hot fomentation compress), garlic (crushed), nutmeg, paprika, tamanu oil, tea tree oil and turmeric.
Prevention of gangrene
Keep wounds clean and sterile by cleaning all wounds thoroughly with an antiseptic solution and replacing dressings regularly. Watch for signs of infection, such as pus, redness, swelling or unusual pain. People with diabetes should control their blood-sugar levels with proper medication.
Education about proper foot care is vital for people with diabetes. They should routinely examine their feet for any signs of injury or change in skin colour. Any small injury should be immediately cared for. They should keep their nails trimmed and wear comfortable well-fitting shoes.
Greasy skin
Seborrhoea is the name for the condition of greasy skin caused by excess sebum. Sebum is made of triglyceride oils, wax, squalene and metabolites of fat-producing cells and acts as a delivery system for antioxidants, antimicrobial lipids, pheromones and provides hydration of the skin.
Seborrhoeic eczema is caused by the malfunctioning of sebaceous glands. This disorder results in irregular sebum production and the consequent infection of the epidermal cells. This normally happens on the scalp, cheeks, eyebrows and wherever else hair follicles are found and causes unsightly yellow peeling skin.
The following natural foods can help treat seborrhoea. Consuming only organic natural produce is important for mineral content and the elimination of chemical pesticide residues and additives in the diet which will in turn lead to less oil being produced by the sebaceous glands.
Through stools, urine, tears and sweat the body rids itself of toxins that would otherwise build up and lead to greasy skin. Fevers and skin eruptions are a natural part of the cleansing process and shouldn’t be suppressed. Cleansing allows the body to restore balance and occurs when imbalance is too great and threatens health and life. Ingesting live organic natural plant foods encourages this process to take place faster and can help clear up greasy skin which can clog the pores and lead to acne. For natural foods to add to the diet see>> Healthy diet to aid recovery
Hives
Although the cause of hives (urticaria)is often unknown, they are often a response to the body releasing histamines, which it does due to an allergic reaction to food, medicine or other allergens. Histamine is also sometimes the body’s response to infections, stress, sunlight and changes in temperature, among other things. Hives are small, swollen, itchy, red areas on the skin that may occur singularly or in clusters. Hives usually fade within a few hours, but new ones may appear in their place. Most hive outbreaks resolve themselves completely within a few days.
Natural remedies for hives
Basil can work as a natural antihistamine. Heat a couple sprigs of basil leaves up under some steam and apply gently to the hives. Basil may help reassure the body that the foreign agent causing the hives is not something it should be fighting.
Bicarbonate of soda: Make a thick paste out of baking soda and water. Spread on infected area. Leave for 10 minutes then rinse off.
Chamomile tea is commonly used by people to treat hives. If taking warfarin, do not take chamomile without first getting approval from a doctor.
Devil’s claw may reduce the inflammation and can be helpful if skin lesions occur from severe hive outbreaks.
Ginger can be taken with food, as a tea and the raw peeled root can be dabbed onto the affected area for relief of hives.
Goldenseal is best known for its gastrointestinal benefits, has also been found to be beneficial for people with food allergies to eliminate or reduce allergic reactions.
Green tea, commonly known for its amazing health benefits including antihistamine effects, is available both with and without caffeine.
Liquorice root can reduce inflammation caused by hives and supports the immune system to help the body recover from symptoms more quickly.
Oatmeal: soak in a warm, not hot, oatmeal bath to relieve itching and soothe the skin.
Stinging nettle is known for its ability to reduce the amount of histamine the body produces.
Coldsfoot may be effective as a natural antihistamine. Europeans have a long history of using the plant to cure skin conditions. The leaves can be ground up into a paste and applied topically.
A healthy balanced diet with plenty of foods rich in vitamin C and vitamin E rich foods can help speed recovery from hives. Eat foods that contain live probiotics for optimal digestive health to shorten the length of the hives when they occur as a result of food allergies. Yogurt that contains live active cultures, brine pickles, cottage cheese and sauerkraut are some good sources.
NOTE: If suffering from high blood pressure, a heart condition, oedema or are taking certain medications such as warfarin or diuretics, do not take liquorice root. If suffering with diabetes or are taking blood pressure or blood-thinning medication, do not take devil’s claw.
Insect bites
Most insect bites can be irritating and itchy and need a simple remedy to relieve them, but some can carry bacteria, parasites and viruses and a blood test is required to determine what this infection is.
Powassan is a minor cause of viral encephalitis in the northern United States and is transmitted by ticks. A new powassan like virus has recently been isolated from deer ticks. Encephalitis is global, in Asia, for example, about 50,000 cases of Japanese encephalitis are reported annually.
Natural remedies for simple bites and stings are applied topically as a tea, essential oil or paste such as:
Camphor oil is a very effective local anaesthesia as it causes numbness of the sensory nerves at the area of application. It is also antiseptic so can successfully treat and relieve the pain of insect bites.
Homemade natural insect repellent spray
In a spray bottle, mix 2 mugs of distilled white vinegar and 1 mug of water. To make a scented solution (to eliminate the vinegar odour) add 20 drops of any essential oil. Eucalyptus oil works as a tick repellent, while peppermint and citrus oils give off a strong crisp scent that also repel ticks and mosquitoes.
After mixing the solution, spray onto clothing, skin and hair before going outdoors. Reapply every four hours to keep ticks at bay and examine your skin and hair when back inside to make sure no ticks are on the body.
NOTE: Essential oil is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding mothers
Repellent for pets
For pets, add 1 mug of water to a spray bottle, followed by 2 mugs of distilled white vinegar. Then add two spoonful’s of vegetable or almond oil which both contain sulphur (another natural tick repellent).
To make a repellent that will also deter fleas, mix in a few teaspoons of lemon juice, citrus oil or peppermint oil, any of which will repel ticks and fleas while also creating a nicely scented repellent. Spray onto the pet’s dry coat, staying away from sensitive areas including eyes, nose, mouth and genitals. When outdoors spray this solution on two to three times per day.
Removing ticks
- Use fine-tipped tweezers to firmly grasp the tick very close to the skin.
- Don’t squeeze it as squeezing can speed up infection.
- With a steady motion pull the tick’s body away from the skin.
- Then clean skin with soap and warm water.
- Avoid crushing the tick’s body.
Do not be alarmed if the tick’s mouth parts remain in the skin. Once the mouth parts are removed from the rest of the tick, it can no longer transmit disease.
If the tick is crushed, clean the skin with soap and warm water or alcohol.
Don’t use petroleum jelly, a hot match, nail polish or other products to remove a tick.
For information about ticks bites from deer see>> Lyme disease
Pemphigus
Pemphigus is an autoimmune disorder that causes painful blisters, bumps and scabs on the surface of the skin similar to eczema and often misdiagnosed as such. It often affects mucous membranes such as the nose, throat, tongue and genitals and can cause blisters in and around the mouth. Isothiocyanates, phenols, thiols and tannins found in foods are known to trigger outbreaks of pemphigus and therefore it is wise to try a two-week elimination of foods containing these compounds to see if the condition improves. To find out more and which foods to eliminate from the diet see>> Pemphigus.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder that affects 1% to 3% of the world’s population. It is characterized by periodic flare-ups of well defined, red patches covered by a silvery, flaky scale on the skin and the scalp. There are several variations of psoriasis, but the most common type is chronic plaque psoriasis. The exact cause is unknown, but it is believed that a combination of several factors contributes to the development of this disease.
In a normally functioning immune system, white blood cells produce antibodies to foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. These white blood cells also produce chemicals that aid in healing and fighting infective agents. But with psoriasis, special white blood cells called T-cells become overactive.
These T-cells “attack” the skin and set off a cascade of events that make the skin cells multiply so fast they start to stack up on the surface of the skin. Normal skin cells form, mature, then are sloughed off every 30 days. But in plaque psoriasis the skin goes through this whole process in 3-6 days.
Psoriatic arthropathy is a form of arthritis that many people with psoriasis can develop. It causes pain, swelling and stiffness in joints.
Damage
Sometimes an injury to the skin can cause the formation of a psoriasis patch. This is known as the Koebner Phenomenon, and it can occur in other skin diseases, such as eczema and lichen planus. It can take 2 to 6 weeks for a psoriasis lesion to develop after an injury. Types of damage that can trigger a flare include abrasion – even mild abrasions, increased friction from clothing or skin rubbing against skin in folds, such as armpits or under breasts, sunburn, viral rashes, drug rashes and the weather.
Diet
Alcohol, sugar, coffee, fatty meats, refined processed foods, additives and deficiencies in minerals and phytonutrients can induce attacks of psoriasis,
Low levels of calcium have been reported as a trigger for psoriasis. Medications made with vitamin D are used to treat psoriasis to enable absorption of calcium, but low levels of vitamin D do not trigger a flare-up. Never take calcium supplements which can cause calcification of arteries and adversely affect the heart. Instead choose natural foods rich in calcium.
Highest sources of calcium in micrograms per 100 grams
- Dried herbs such as basil, dill, marjoram, rosemary and thyme 2113 mg
- Cheese such as goat’s, gruyere, parmesan, Romano and Swiss 1376 mg

Drugs that can induce or worsen psoriasis
The following drugs are known to either worsen psoriasis or induce a flare-up:
- Chloroquine used to treat or prevent malaria
- ACE inhibitors used to treat high blood pressure. Examples include monopril, captopril, and lisinopril.
- Beta blockers also used to treat high blood pressure. Examples include lopressor and atenolol.
- Lithium a medication used to treat bipolar disorder
- Indocin an anti-inflammatory medication used to treat a variety of conditions, including gout and arthritis
- Corticosteroids, such as prednisone or solumedrol, can actually dramatically improve psoriasis. However, abruptly stopping the drug or rapidly tapering off of it can trigger a flare-up.
Stress
Psychological stress has long been understood as a trigger for psoriasis flares, but scientists are still unclear about exactly how this occurs. Studies do show that not only can a sudden, stressful event trigger a rash to worsen, daily hassles of life can also trigger a flare. In addition, one study showed that people who were categorized as “high worriers” were almost two times less likely to respond to treatment compared to “low worriers.”
Infections
Infections caused by bacteria or viruses can cause a psoriasis flare. Streptococcal infections that cause tonsillitis, or strep throat, tooth abscesses, cellulitis, and impetigo can cause a flare of guttate psoriasis in children. The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) does not increase the frequency of psoriasis, but it does increase the severity of the disease.
Weather
Weather is a strong factor in triggering psoriasis. Exposure to direct sunlight, which usually occurs in the warmer months, often improves the rash. On the other hand, cold, short days seen in the winter months can trigger the rash to worsen.
External treatment for psoriasis
The following can be used externally to treat psoriasis e:
- Egg white (beaten to fluffy stage)
- Burdock root,
- Chinese rhubarb root
- Mango
- Oats
- Parsley
- Pine needle tea bath
- Tamanu oil
Vitiligo
Vitiligo are white spots, streaks and patches of skin and hair where normal pigmentation has been lost due to destruction of the pigment cells (melanocytes) in the skin. This means that no more melanin or pigment is made in these places. For more information and natural remedies see>> Vitiligo
Warts, moles and skin tags
Since warts are caused by a viral infection, boosting the body’s immune system is one of the most effective methods of preventing and treating warts. Consuming foods high in vitamin C can keep the immune system in good working order and help to treat warts. Some people have also found it helpful to apply vitamin C directly to the wart as a topical treatment. Vitamin E can also help as it works to improve skin condition. Also be sure to drink plenty of bottled mineral water and get sufficient rest.
The following remedies can also work for benign prominent moles and annoying skin tags which are very common after middle age.
Remedy 1. Gently rough up the outer surface of the wart with an emery board then place the inside of the banana skin over the wart and bandage. This should remove the wart after a few hours.
Remedy 2. Soak a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar and apply to the wart using duct tape or medical tape. Leave on overnight. Remedy 5. Duct Tape Occlusion Therapy is a natural wart remedy that is quite often recommended by medical doctors. The remedy involves placing a piece of duct tape over the wart for several days or weeks. If the piece of tape should fall off, replace it with a fresh piece or tape. Some of the wart may come off with the tape, but the dead cells can be removed with a pumice stone or emery board if necessary. This is a highly effective natural wart remedy.
Remedy 6. Rub castor oil on the warts every day for several months.
Remedy 7. Take one fig leaf and apply the milk or sap from the leaf to the affected areas. Do this twice daily until the wart disappears.
Remedy 8. Smear some cold pressed virgin coconut oil on to a cotton wool pad then sprinkle a small amount of turmeric onto the pad and place over the wart. Tape it on overnight then remove and wash normally. Repeat nightly until the wart has gone.
Remedy 9. Slice a clove of garlic thinly. Take one slice of garlic and hold over the wart, mole or skin tag and count slowly to 20. Remove the garlic and then rub a little vitamin E oil on to the affected area. Repeat once a day until the wart, mole or skin tag have gone. Use the rest of the garlic for cooking. Unwanted hair removal
In medical terms, abnormal hair growth (on the face as well as the body) in women is called hirsutism. It has been observed that individuals with dark hair or pigmentation are likely to be hairier than those with a lighter pigmentation or blonde hair. People typically have hair almost everywhere on the body, except on the nails and eyeballs. Thus, women do have facial hair, but it is usually only very fine light-coloured hair.
Unwanted facial hair can become an embarrassing beauty concern for women, especially when they age and their oestrogen levels change due to menopause. Issues such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, other hormonal conditions, use of certain medications such as steroids or adrenal gland disorders can also cause unwanted facial hair. In rare cases, the problem can be caused by a tumour or cancer of the adrenal gland or ovaries.
If there is unusual or excessive hair growth on the face or body (may be accompanied by masculine features such as increased muscle mass, deepening voice, decreased breast size, etc., consult a health care professional for proper diagnosis and treatment of any underlying medical condition which may be a hormonal disorder.
While some of the following home remedies for unwanted facial hair can instantly remove hair from the face like those using peel off mask or exfoliating scrubs, other herbal remedies may take many months before they show any positive result.
For results, be patient and use one or more of the following remedies daily or three to four times a week for at least one month. The key to select an effective remedy is to understand the underlying cause for the unusual growth of unwanted hair on the face and then use the appropriate remedy for it.

Chasteberry herbal extract
Chasteberry, sometimes also called Chaste tree (Vitex agnus castus), is a flowering plant and is popular as a women’s herb. One of the foremost causes of hirsutism is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Just like saw palmetto (see below), the standardised extract of Chaste tree also has anti-androgenic properties. Primarily used as a herbal remedy for PCOS, chasteberry extract can also cure hirsutism when the underlying cause is PCOS.
It acts on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands and increases the production of luteinizing hormone (LH). This mildly inhibits the release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). As a result progesterone hormone increases as compared to oestrogen hormone in the body. Thus, chaste tree extract balances the right hormones essential for women, treats their menstrual problems related to PCOS and in the process also removes unwanted facial and other body hair.
Chaste tree extract is available in tincture as well as capsule form. As far as daily dose of chasteberry extract is concerned, the general guideline states that you should take 175 mg of this extract which is standardised to contain 0.6% agusides. However, because this herb affects the female hormone levels, it is strictly advised that a naturopathic doctor is consulted to get the exact dosage for the specific problem.
This herb, like most of the other herbal remedies, takes time to show its effect. Before drawing any conclusion about its positive effect on unwanted body hair, take this extract for 2-6 months.
NOTE: Pregnant and nursing women should not take any herbal extract without consulting their doctor. Chaste tree herb can also interfere with certain antipsychotic drugs and Parkinson’s disease medications.

Women suffering from hirsutism have high levels of androgen, the male sex hormone. Women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) have high levels of androgen which results into growth of hair at unwanted places like chin, upper lips, breast and even abdomen. Saw palmetto reduces this high level of male hormones through its anti-androgenic effects.

The extract of saw palmetto is available in capsule form. Saw palmetto extract is derived from its berries. This extract is rich in fatty acids and phytosterols. This will be enough for removing unwanted hair from the face though kit may take a long period of time.
NOTE: Pregnant and nursing women should not take saw palmetto extract due to its effects on hormones. Those who take blood thinning drugs should consult their doctor before taking this herbal extract.
