Isothiocyanates intolerance

An allergy to isothiocyanates, which are found in plants like mustard, horseradish, and some cruciferous vegetables, can cause a range of symptoms, from mild skin irritation to severe allergic reactions like anaphylaxis. Common reactions include skin rashes, itching, and inflammation, while more severe cases can involve respiratory distress, swelling, and gastrointestinal issues. Pemphigus is one condition that can cause an intolerance to isothiocyanates

Foods to avoid that contain isothiocyanates

  • Bok choy
  • Broccoli
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Cabbage
  • Cauliflower
  • Chinese cabbage
  • Collard greens
  • Cress
  • Daikon
  • Horseradish
  • Kale
  • Kohlrabi

NOTE: Extracts from the brown seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum have been found to increase the total isothiocyanate content in broccoli when used as a fertiliser, indicating a potential transfer of isothiocyanates or their precursors from seaweed to other plants.
