Alkaloid intolerance

Vegetables of the nightshade family contain cholinesterase inhibiting glycoalkaloids and steroid alkaloids. Plants produce these alkaloids as a defence against pathogens and pest. Some people develop an intolerance to these alkaloids, and it is best to try eliminating them from the diet for one month to see if there is any improvement in symptoms.

What are the alkaloids in vegetables?

  • Capsaicin in peppers
  • Chaconine in potatoes
  • Dehydrotomatine in tomatoes
  • Nicotine in tobacco
  • Solasmin, solasodine and solamargine in aubergines
  • Solanine in aubergines and potatoes
  • Tomatine in tomatoes
  • Viciaine in broad beans

Members of the nightshade family

  • Ashwaganda
  • Aubergines
  • Peppers
  • Potatoes
  • Tomatoes

What are the symptoms of alkaloid intolerance?

Many who suffer with arthritis or inflammatory diseases such as fibromyalgia, lupus, rheumatism and other musculoskeletal pain disorders have found that consuming foods that contain glycoalkaloids worsens their condition.

The glycoalkaloids in potatoes are known to contribute to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and negatively affect intestinal permeability which can also lead to an over reactive immune system.

What other health problems can alkaloids cause?

Symptoms of glycoalkaloids and steroid alkaloids intolerance may dissipate in a few hours or days if ingestion is stopped based on the sensitivity of the individual, the number of nightshades consumed on a regular basis and their level of inflammation.

However ,for some heavy consumers of nightshades, the process of inflammation and pain reduction can take up to three months. It is a good idea to try eliminating all nightshades from the diet for three months to see if symptoms improve.
