Phloridzin is sometimes also referred to as phlorizin, phlorrhizin, phlorhizin or phlorizoside. It is a dihydrochalcone and flavonoid glucoside that causes inhibition of sodium/glucose co-transporters in the kidneys and intestine which lowers absorption of glucose. It can help to regulate blood sugar levels in diabetics naturally and prevents bone loss associated with menopause. It may also help with weight control.
Phloridzin also has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumour and neuroprotective properties. It accumulates on the surface of plant parts (especially leaves and fruit peel) and helps reduce UV-B radiation transmission, protecting the plant from damage and microbial attack. Studies have shown that extracts containing high amounts of phloridzin can inhibit the growth of specific bacteria and fungi.
