Soursop

Also known as Annona muricata, guanabana, guyabano, graviola or custard apple.

The soursop is a small, upright evergreen tree about 5-6 meters high with large, glossy, dark green leaves. This tree is called graviola in Brazil, guanabana in Spanish and has the uninspiring name “soursop” in English.

The fruit is very large, and the sub acid sweet white pulp is eaten out of hand or, more commonly, used to make fruit drinks, sherbets etc. This Amazonian fruit is edible fresh or in ice creams.

A leaf decoction is used for catarrh and the crushed seed to kill parasites. The bark, roots and leaves are used in teas for diabetes and as a sedative and heart tonic.  Some natives use the leaf tea to cleanse and support the liver.

Cancer and soursop fruit

Fruit from the soursop tree is a miraculous natural cancer cell killer 10,000 times stronger than chemotherapy without the debilitating side effects. A novel set of chemicals called annonaceous acetogenins, found in the leaf, stem, bark and fruit seeds, have been confirmed by three separate research groups to have significant anti-tumour properties and selective toxicity against various types of cancer cells (without harming healthy cells), at very low doses.

Soursop can effectively target and kill malignant cells in 12 types of cancer, including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreatic cancer without causing hair loss, extreme nausea or weight loss. The tree compounds proved to be up to 10,000 times stronger in slowing the growth of cancer cells than Adriamycin, a commonly used chemotherapeutic drug. Also, unlike chemotherapy, the compound extracted from the soursop tree selectively hunts down and kills only cancer cells but does not harm healthy cells.

Soursop is also effective for a number of other health issues such as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent for both bacterial and fungal infections, effective against internal parasites and worms, lowers high blood pressure and is used for depression, stress and nervous disorders.

Research shows that, with extracts from this remarkable tree, it now may be possible to:

  • Protect the immune system and avoid deadly infections.
  • Help the patient to feel stronger and healthier throughout the course of the treatment.
  • Boost energy and improve the outlook on life.
