Eye bright herb

Also known as Euphrasia officinalis.

Eye bright is a herb that belongs to the Figwort family and is so named because it has powerful antibacterial properties and nutrients that can help with many eye disorders.

Eye disorders that eye bright can treat

  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids)
  • Bloodshot or strained eyes
  • Cataracts
  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Ophthalmia (severe inflammation of the eye)
  • Styes
  • Weeping eyes

It has also been found to be beneficial in treating allergies, sinusitis, respiratory conditions including bronchitis and colds and skin disorders such as acne and stretch marks, as well as a poor memory,

Beneficial compounds in eye bright

To make eyebright tea to use as a cold compress, take a handful of carefully washed eyebright flowers, leaves and stems and boil it in 375 ml of water for 10 minutes. Strain the leaves with a very fine strainer or cotton cloth and let the remaining liquid cool. Dip a small cotton pad in it and use it as a compress three to four times daily.

Drinking three cups of eyebright tea a day can also help speed up the healing process.

How to make eye drops for eye conditions

Requirements

  • 1 tablespoon of dried eyebright
  • 250 ml of filtered water
  • Sterilised dropper bottle
  • 1 teaspoon of saline solution (optional, for greater eye comfort)

Method

  1. Boil a cup of water and add the dried eyebright.
  2. Let the mixture steep for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Strain well to remove all particles.
  4. Let it cool completely.
  5. If desired, add a saline solution for a milder sensation in the eyes.
  6. Transfer to a sterilised dropper bottle.

How to use

  • Apply 1-2 drops in the eyes, 2 to 3 times a day.
  • Store in the refrigerator and use within 48 hours.
  • If there is any discomfort, discontinue use immediately.
