Malvidin

Red grapes

Malvidin and its glycosides are responsible for the red to blue pigments of many plant foods and for the colour of primroses. It is a powerful anthocyanin antioxidant that can slow down age-related motor changes, such as those seen in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. It does this by preventing the oxidisation of certain compounds and fight attacks on the body from harmful chemicals.

Malvidin and cancer

Malvidin, in conjunction with chlorogenic acid and pelargonidin chloride, is a critical co-factor in the anti-proliferation of colon and liver cancer cells. But without the other two co-factors the process will not take place. Malvidin is cytotoxic to human leukaemia cells by stopping the cancer cell cycle and inducing apoptosis (cell death).

Other health benefits of malvidin

The health benefits of antioxidants like malvidin include anti-inflammatory qualities and can lead to better heart health and protection against diabetes. It also helps protect the lining of blood vessels by inhibiting certain enzymes and increasing nitric oxide production. Malvidin has also been shown to have a positive effect on the brain, collagen (the tissues under the skin) and the eyes. They also help to support the immune system.

Grape extracts rich in malvidin have been shown to improve bone mineral density and strength.
