Silymarin is a unique type of flavonoid like compound considered one of the active ingredients of artichokes and milk thistle. It is a mixture of several related antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds called flavonolignans.
Its potent antioxidant properties prevent harm from free radicals, and it lends nutritional support to the liver and gall bladder. It is a natural detoxifier and protects the liver from many industrial toxins such as carbon tetrachloride, medications and agents like alcohol. It may also have a protective effect after chemotherapy used to fight cancer.
Silymarin can help to lower blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity in people with type 2 diabetes.
It can also improve inflammatory skin conditions, protect against UV damage, and reduce signs of aging.
Silymarin is used as an antidote for poisoning from the death cap mushroom (Amanita phalloides)
NOTE 1: Silymarin may interact with some diabetes and cholesterol lowering medications and some chemotherapy agents.
NOTE 2: People with allergies to other plants in the daisy family such as chrysanthemums or ragweed may experience an allergic reaction to milk thistle.
