Guanine

Spirulina

Guanine (G) is one of four chemical bases in DNA, with the other three being adenine (A), cytosine (C) and thymine (T). Guanine is produced with cytosine. Guanine functions as a building block of DNA to encode information. It is also utilised for energy and in many different G proteins. These proteins are crucial for transmitting a wide range of stimuli, such as hormones, neurotransmitters, and light, to trigger cellular responses.

In scientific studies, guanine has been shown to reduce seizures and pain, stabilise mood disorder behaviours and protect against gliomas. A glioma is a type of cancerous brain tumour that originates in glial cells, which are the supporting cells of the brain and spinal cord. Guanine can also protect against diseases related with aging, such as ischemia or Parkinson and Alzheimer diseases.
