Theobromine

Cacao beans

Cacao refers to the raw, unroasted beans from the Theobroma cacao tree, while cocoa and chocolate is the result of roasting and processing those beans at high temperatures. The alkaloid theobromine is increased by gentle roasting as the water is evaporated. However, prolonged high temperatures will degrade the amount of theobromine found in cocoa and chocolate because it causes the breakdown of theobromine and bonding with other compounds, such as diketopiperazines. Darker chocolate contains more theobromine.

Theobromine, diabetes and obesity

Theobromine is an alkaloid with anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce oxidative stress, which can help with conditions like obesity. Its ability to promote the “browning” of white fat and activate brown fat may contribute to weight management efforts. Theobromine also regulates gut microbiota, reduces tumour formation and helps to balance blood glucose levels.

Theobromine and the urinary system

It can prevent the formation of kidney stones by inhibiting uric acid crystallisation and its mild diuretic action (increases the production of urine).

Theobromine and heart health

It has been shown to lower systolic blood pressure and increase blood flow throughout the body, which helps deliver more oxygen and nutrients to cells and remove waste products. Some evidence suggests that regular consumption of theobromine can help reduce LDL cholesterol and improve HDL cholesterol levels.

Theobromine and the brain and mental health

As a mild stimulant, theobromine provides a smoother, long-lasting energy boost helping to enhance cognitive function, mental alertness and focus. It also shows promise in protecting against cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disorders.

Theobromine and respiratory disorders

Theobromine relaxes the smooth muscles in the airways, which may help with symptoms of asthma and other related lung conditions.

Theobromine and tooth decay

Research has shown that theobromine can strengthen tooth enamel and protect it from erosion.

Excess theobromine dangers

Complications of over consumption of theobromine include digestive issues, dehydration, excitability, and a slow heart rate. Later stages of theobromine poisoning include epileptic-like seizures and death. If caught early on, theobromine poisoning is treatable. Although not common, the effects of theobromine poisoning can be fatal.

NOTE: Theobromine is toxic to animals like cats, dogs, horses and parrots so chocolate should never be fed to them.
