Erucic acid

Erucic acid is a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid which is a constituent of many plant oils. It is a powerful tumour fighting compound which can also protect against cardiovascular disease by helping to lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.

In the 1970’s it was reported that erucic acid caused heart problems in rats but there has never been a documented case of any toxicity of erucic acid in humans. Rapeseed and mustard seed oils are high in erucic acid but have been used for centuries in India and many other countries. However, when cooking with any kind of plant oil, (whether they contain erucic acid or not) it is best to keep the temperature below 180°C (356°F).

NOTE: It is not advisable for nursing mothers or babies to eat too much food that contains erucic acid.
