Ribose is a monosaccharide and constituent of vitamin B2 (riboflavin) which helps the body’s cells to utilise oxygen. Vitamin B2 is water soluble and contributes to good vision and healthy hair, skin and nails. Riboflavin is the vitamin responsible for the yellow green, fluorescent glow or hue commonly seen in urine after taking a B-complex supplement. Ribose helps improve cell function, including collagen and elastin production. This, in turn, can lead to firmer, smoother, and more youthful-looking skin.

Ribose may improve symptoms of heart failure and some aspects of exercise recovery. It may also help reduce symptoms in those with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome.

Ribose also plays a structural role in the formation of two very important nucleic acids known as deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA). It also contributes to the formation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the primary energy source for muscular contraction and without ribose, the cells cannot manufacture ATP.

Ribose is used as a treatment for muscle cramping and the elimination of severe stiffness, pain and muscle soreness experienced in response to physical exertion.

NOTE: Ribose supplements should be avoided by those with diabetes especially with diabetic medications. Ribose supplements can cause diarrhoea, headaches, nausea, stomach discomfort and low blood sugar and may induce renal damage.
