HALITOSIS (Bad breath)

Halitosis refers to bad breath which is not only a sign of ill-health but it is also a social stigma. It is common in some people at all times and in all people some of the time. Unfortunately, most people who offend in this respect are completely unaware of their problem and the discomfort they cause to others.

Causes of halitosis

Anaemia: Disorders like anaemia may lead to unpleasant breath.

Constipation: The patients suffering from halitosis should take a well-balanced diet consisting of seeds, nuts whole grains, vegetables and fruits, with emphasis on raw and cooked vegetables and fruits. In case of constipation, all measures should be adopted for its eradication.

Gastro-intestinal disorders: Many cases of bad breath are also caused by gastro-intestinal disorders, intestinal sluggishness and particularly by chronic constipation. The unpleasant odour results from an exceptionally large amount of waste matter expelled through the lungs.

Gum and tooth disorders: This is the most common cause of bad breath. Dental decay at the roots of the teeth may result in abscesses in the gums with foul-smelling, pus giving an objectionable odour to the breath. Even small holes in the teeth may provide a place where germs can multiply and release foul orders.

Nose, sinus or throat infections

Parasite (worms) infection in the guts.

Respiratory tract disorders such as  lung diseases like bronchitis and bronchiectasis which cause a discharge at the back of the throat.

Tobacco: Chewing tobacco and smoking are other causes of bad breath.

Vitamin B3 (niacin): A deficiency of this vitamin in the diet can cause halitosis.

The teeth should be cleaned regularly after eating especially before going to bed at night with a natural toothpaste. Meat particles should be removed carefully with toothpicks or dental floss. In case of decaying teeth and swollen and bleeding gums, a dentist should be consulted.

Acidic environment: Check the pH of the saliva with pHydrion paper. If it is is below 7.2 then an imbalance of the bacteria flora in the intestines could be the cause. To increase the oral pH to a normal 7.2 or greater, drink one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in two ounces of cooled boiled water. It is that simple to neutralise the acids that cause bacteria imbalance, yeast infections, virus infections, tooth cavities and decay, mouth sores, proliferation of worms and parasites, halitosis, acne, MRSA, anaemia and even oral cancer.

Cleaning the teeth with coconut oil and bicarbonate of soda after eating can help to correct the PH balance and avoiding commercial powerful toothpastes and mouthwashes can also help readdress the balance. It has been proved that the strong antibacterial mouthwashes that contain alcohol encourages the proliferation of worms and parasites.

Halitosis suffers should avoid all processed, refined and carbohydrate foods, such as white sugar, white flour and white rice and products made from them as well as coffee.

Natural remedies for halitosis

  • Aloe vera juice can help to kill the germs that can cause bad breath.

  • Anise seed tea can kill the bacteria that causes halitosis.

  • Apple: Consuming a raw apple after eating a meal can help to remove particles between the teeth.

  • Avocado: An effective remedy for bad breath is the use of avocado which is far superior to any mouth lotion or remedies for this condition. It effectively removes intestinal putrefaction or decomposition which is one of the most common causes of bad breath.

  • Coconut oil: Cold-pressed coconut oil mixed with a little bicarbonate of soda makes and effective natural toothpaste that can help to prevent bad breath if used after eating.

  • Fennel: A tea is prepared by putting a teaspoon of seeds in half a litre of water and allowing to simmer for 15 minutes over a low flame. It should then be strained and drunk regularly.

  •  Fenugreek: A tea is prepared by putting a teaspoon of seeds in half a litre of water and allowing to simmer for 15 minutes over a low flame. It should then be strained and drunk regularly.

  • Figs   Try consuming three soaked figs with breakfast. Drink the water in which the figs were soaked. The take plenty of liquids and drink six glasses of bottled mineral water daily one of which should be drunk before going to sleep.

  • Green tea: makes an ideal mouthwash to use after eating as it will kill the bacteria that can be responsible for bad breath.

  • Guava: The unripe guava is rich in malic, oxalic, phospheric and tannic acids as well as calcium and manganese which are useful to help cure bad breath. Chewing the tender leaves of the guava is an excellent tonic for the teeth and gums and can help to cure bleeding from the gums due to stypic effect. Eating a guava after a meal can remove most of the trapped particles between the teeth.

  • Neem twigs: These can be used as a toothbrush to clean the teeth.

  • Parsley is valuable in the treatment of bad breath. Two cups of water should be boiled and several springs of parsley, coarsely chopped, should be steeped in this water along with two or three whole cloves or a quarter spoon of ground cloves. Stir it occasionally while cooling. It should then be strained and used as a mouth wash and gargled several times a day.

  • Peppermint tea after a meal can help to prevent halitosis.

  • Prunes: Try consuming six to eight soaked prunes with breakfast. Drink the water in which the prunes were soaked. The take plenty of liquids and drink six glasses of bottled mineral water daily one of which should be drunk before going to sleep.

  • Psyllium husks (not capsules) are available from health food shops and some pharmacies. Take one tablespoon  with plenty of water will help with digestive and intestinal disorders as well as relief of diarrhoea and constipation and this can help eliminate bad breath.

  • Raw juice therapy can successfully treat halitosis. The best organic natural foods to juice are: apple, grapefruit, lemon, pineapple, tomato, carrot, celery and spinach.

The person suffering from bad breath should take plenty of exercise as lack of sufficient exercise is one of the main causes of constipation which can lead to halitosis.
